1 I use the term ‘Aboriginal people’ to refer to Indigenous Australians and Torres Strait Islanders (where appropriate).

2 ‘Structural violence’ refers to the violence exerted systematically and indirectly by everyone who belongs to a certain order, and which informs the social machinery of oppression. It can be defined as violence perpetuated as a second- or third-order outcome of a steep socio-economic gradient in society which is structured in legislation, and hence legal sanction. The concept is based on the analytical approach of Paulo Freire, Pedagogy of the Oppressed (1970).
